What is it about a place that can conjure magic for an artist? Clearly there are locations across our planet that hold special meaning, that must be seen and experienced, to which we are drawn, as if upon a pilgrimage. Places where we are able to commune with our maker, and subsume our ego in something so much more inscrutable, eternal, and impassive than the few frail moments that make up our own time on this earth.
In the presence of this nexus of earth, sky, water, and life, I believe that those so inclined, and attuned, are moved to pay homage to these special places with their artistic gifts. Through that process, the artist attempts to merge a portion of themselves with the essence of these locales, becoming part of the historical, cultural, artistic, and possibly even, the spiritual tapestry of these special places. Thus, the alchemy occurs when we weave a part of ourselves to these places through our art, whatever form that takes, and generally of significance only to the artist. For me, this is how the magic of place happens.
